SAMPLING OF GAMES WE PLAY

Communication Challenges

on the river and off it

"The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play."

- Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise

There are dozens of games to play and the list below is just a representative sample. Not all are river games. We make use of whatever the environment offers. Every game contains surprises, and in many cases there is a "hidden agenda" which participants discover later in the analysis and review. But most importantly, the facilitator does not instruct or say how the game should be understood and what lessons to take from it - that's up to the participants themselves.

CONCEPT NAME OF GAME HOW IT'S PLAYED
Goal sharing Reading the rapid Discuss how to run it - and then do it with eyes wide shut!
Co-opetition Boat stacking Teams compete to build a common structure.
Faith in others Blindfolded in Rapid Paddler can't see; must obey instructions.
Confidence in self Do-it-now Take charge and force the issue.
De-stressing Watch and Wait Go with the flow despite impatience.
Deadline delivery Raft race Leaderless team must achieve end result.
Honesty Footsy-footsy Push the ball to a defined point. Get there without cheating.
Diplomacy Truth Be Untold Watch them fail, spare their feelings but demonstrate success anyway.
Conflict Hurry up and Shut up Resolve friction in the group while attempting to complete an adventure challenge.
Ubuntu (humanism) Accident victim Compassion and empathy in a tricky situation with no clear knowledge.
Traditionalism Old Timers' Boating Listen, respect, do and critique old methods.
Inventiveness MacGyver's Paddle Cross barriers between apparently unrelated technologies.
Leadership I say this Consult and give a ruling to the group that must be obeyed.
Followership We say that React, express divergent views to reach consensus and common action.
